In A Fortune in Oils: Sid Richardson’s Personal Collection, the museum highlights Sid’s interests in art, philanthropy, cattle, and oil. It is his career in the petroleum industry that enabled him to amass one of the largest private art collections of works by Frederic Remington and Charles Russell. Sid Richardson learned the oil business from the ground up, beginning with his boom-and-bust career in 1911 hauling pipe and working on an oil well platform near Wichita Falls, Texas, followed by short stints as an oil scout in Louisiana and Texas before he made his big strike years later. What was it like to work during the Texas oil boom of this period?

Join us for our next Tall Tales book discussion as we read and discuss The Iron Orchard by Tom Pendleton. Please read the selected book prior to the program.

“Hail the return of a classic! No finer book about the brutal realties, gaudy excesses, and euphoric triumphs of the oil business has ever been written than The Iron Orchard by Tom Pendleton/Edmund Van Zandt. The reissue of this essential masterwork of Texas literature is cause for celebration.”

– Sarah Bird, author of Daughter of a Daughter of a Queen
