Sid’s Studio: Painting Place in Acrylic Gouache (October)

Sid’s Studio: Painting Place in Acrylic Gouache (October)

Inspired by Charles M. Russell’s enduring relationship with Glacier National Park as explored in our exhibition Russell’s Retreat: Summers at Glacier National Park, this hands-on workshop explores how artists form deep connections to specific landscapes and how those places continue to shape creative expression.

Led by local artist Jay Asp, participants will create layered paintings using acrylic gouache, building compositions that combine observation, memory, and place-specific imagery. Just as Russell returned season after season to Glacier, discovering new nuances of land and light, participants will reflect on landscapes that have marked their own lives.

Participants will also learn the basics of color theory by working with a limited palette and mixing their own range of colors in acrylic gouache. Through layering color, shape, and imagery, each painting will evolve as a personal interpretation of place—part landscape, part memory, part emotional terrain.

All materials provided. Just bring a place that matters to you and a willingness to explore it through paint.

No experience necessary. Space is limited.

Ages: 18+

Cost: $15 Supply Fee

Registration: Required – Opens September 1

**Due to high interest, this workshop is offered on two dates: August 15 and October 3. Both sessions feature the same content. Choose the date that works best for you.**

Teaching Artist

Jay Asp is an artist of diverse interests, all united by a singular desire to search for beauty.

Jay originally planned to draw comic books, but found himself studying Graphic Design at Bowling Green State University. After spending time in Chicago, IL & Saint Paul, MN, he found himself in Texas, raising a family & longing to improve the craft of his artistic production. To that end, Jay studied in the atelier of Jonathan Hardesty, opening a new door into the world of oil painting.

Since nothing has ever been a straight line for him, instead of immediately producing art professionally, Jay spent the next two decades teaching art in a public high school—a career he loved. Through those years, he began to explore the world at large, found additional mentors & sources of inspiration, and continued producing art at a snail’s pace. The key to greater productivity came via sketchbooks and painting on location (en plein air). Facing an empty nest, Jay finally took the leap to become a professional artist

Now, Jay uses travel as a means to produce landscape paintings. He splits his studio time between various media, believing that an artist need not be limited to a single mode of production. He enjoys painting the figure, but is compelled by narratives & a host of artistic styles. Jay still enjoys teaching and loves to share what he has learned with anyone who is interested.
