After amassing his fortune, oil tycoon Sid Richardson was able to indulge his interest in cattle and horses, acquiring large ranching operations both in Texas and Oklahoma. In 1942, Sid Richardson turned his attention to collecting the works of the artists whom he felt best portrayed the West he knew and loved, Frederic Remington and Charles Russell. Over the years, he built his portfolio of Western art masterpieces that are on display at the museum today.

Night & Day: Frederic Remington’s Final Decade

This exhibition explores works made in the final decade of Frederic Remington’s life, when the artist alternated his canvases between the color dominant palettes of blue-green and yellow-orange. In these late works, he strove to revise his color palette, compositional structure, and brushwork as he set his Western subjects under an interchanging backdrop of the shadows of night and the dazzling light of day.
Picturing the American West

This thematic installation is an invitation for you, the viewer, to consider featured works of art from the Sid Richardson Museum collection in relation to each other based on subject and setting. The new exhibit allows visitors to experience new contexts and perspectives on Western American Art.
