Our exhibition, Remington and Russell in Black and White, explores the artists’ works made in grisaille and used for illustrations in books and magazines. Grisaille painting is an academic approach to prioritizing value before color in painting. A painter will often find it to be easier to focus on the value of a composition, then once the monochromatic layer is dry, apply thin layers of color over the established values. Join us for this Sid’s Studio adult workshop in which local teaching artist Jay Bailey will lead the group in black and white acrylic painting using inspiration from the museum’s exhibition.

This one-day workshop takes place in an afternoon session in the museum’s studio classroom:

Teaching Artist

Jay Bailey was born in Reno, Nevada in 1976. He has a BA in Fine Art from the University of Nevada in Reno, undertook post-baccalaureate studies at the San Francisco Art Institute and has his MFA from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He has shown his work in group and solo exhibitions in the United States, Canada, and Australia.

Inspired by memory and fragmentation, Jay Bailey makes paintings and drawings which create a fabric of images unique to his time and place in the American West. He references a landscape of grand mountains, dramatic skies, deteriorating casinos, hidden underground music venues, dirt country roads, and western and frontier folklore.

He currently divides his time between Texas and Nevada.
