Artist Demo | Kerri Menchaca
The Sid Richardson Museum’s collection is home to five nocturnes, or night paintings, by renowned artist Frederic Remington. Painted in the last decade of his life, Remington’s nocturnes draw visitors into their Western scenes set under the shadows of night and the glow of moonlight. In honor of FWADA’s Fall Gallery Night, the museum has invited Fort Worth artist Kerri Menchaca to host a demonstration of her painting process for creating night-based landscapes. Inspired by Remington’s nocturnes, Menchaca will share her process, invite visitors to add their personal touches to the canvas, and help create meaningful connections with the Remington nocturnes on display in the museum’s current exhibition, Picturing the American West.
“I will share with the audience the techniques I’ve used over the years in creating a sense of atmosphere and mood in my nocturne paintings. By demonstrating the use of glazes and different blending methods for oil painting we will create together a realistic nightscape. I invite audience members of all skill levels to join me as I demonstrate and discuss the influence of color in the night sky.” – Kerri Menchaca
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Kerri Menchaca paints primarily Texas landscapes from photographs that she takes while on road trips in a 1968 Early Bronco. Her paintings focus on the sensory aspects of nature, created with an attention to mood, color and light. Kerri attended the University of Texas in Austin where she graduated with degrees in Art and Art History and a minor in Geology.
“The landscapes of Texas state and national parks and the back roads of rural Texas are frequently the subject matter of my paintings. Our relationship with the landscape, and with the public lands of Texas itself, should be cherished and we are fortunate to be stewards of such beauty. It is this experience that I strive to capture in my paintings with colors that are lusciously vibrant and as intense and unforgiving as the land itself.” – Kerri Menchaca
