Animals, apart from horses, consistently gave Remington trouble and bears remained a mystery to him. He sketched and painted his share over the years, but never quite got the hang of bear anatomy. He was of the opinion that a grizzly can run downhill quicker than a horse and his bruins were always built to gallop, with legs as long as a race horse. His Last Stand shows the climax to a bear hunt on the range. Swarming, yelping dogs have brought their exhausted quarry to bay and the cowboys, with all due respect for the bear’s fearsome reputation, are moving in for the kill.
