SUMMARY:Virtual Lecture | The Horns of Elfland Faintly Blowing: C. M. Russell and the Gift of Imagination
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by the beauty of Montana’s wilderness and the fictional works of likeminded artists and poets, Charles M. Russell created a unique body of work centered on whimsy, fantasy, and the power of imagination. This lesser-known side of Russell’s creative life comes especially alive during his summers at Bull Head Lodge, his retreat on the shores of Lake McDonald in what is now Glacier National Park.
Presented in conjunction with the Sid Richardson Museum’s exhibition Russell’s Retreat: Summers at Glacier National Park, this talk explores the more intimate and playful side of Russell’s art, work he created for himself and his friends alike. From the gnome characters and fanciful stories he developed to sculptures fashioned from found objects such as twisted branches, moss, and birch bark, Russell transformed the woods surrounding Bull Head Lodge into a world of imagination and enchantment.
Join Emily Crawford Triesch, former senior curator at the C. M. Russell Museum, for a closer look at the artist’s whimsical creative universe and the magical atmosphere that flourished during his Glacier summers.
